Since its founding in 1913 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans. Over the years, a wide range of programs addressing education, health, international development, and strengthening of the African American family have evolved. In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Program Thrust of Economic Development, Educational Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement.


The Red Hat/Red Tie committee is a steering body for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Kansas City (KS) Alumnae Chapter that provides activities for the selection, reviewing, and disbursement of the Red Hat/Red Tie Scholarship.  Its objective is to promote educational growth within the community by awarding a minimum of two scholarships annually, to one female and one male outstanding African American high school seniors.

2024 Red Hat/Red Tie Scholarship Guidelines and Application

1. Applicant must be a male or female high school senior as of August 2023, with a grade point average of 3.0 or better and of African American descent. 

2. All letters of recommendation must be submitted on official letterhead. The Community Service and Scholastic Recommendations must be typewritten and placed in a sealed envelope addressed to:

3. The essay of the applicant must include the following:

                          * Extra-curricular activities (Including dates served and leadership position held)
                          * Honors and Awards (Including a brief description of the honor/award)
                          * Educational Plans
                          * Community Involvement (Including dates served and positions held)

                         
4.  Applicants are required to answer one (1) essay question. Response must be typed, double-spaced and a maximum of 250 words.


5. The scholarship recipient must attend the Red Hat/Red Tie Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, April 27, 2024.   Scholarship recipients will be notified by Sunday, February 24, 2024, of location of event and time.

 Completed applications and essays must be received by Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
